It took us almost the entire trip to figure out what to do about a bill at the end of a meal.  We would be waiting forever wondering why the server wasn't bringing the bill.  In New Zealand you must ask for the bill and sometimes bring your money up to the waitress.  They think it is rude to rush people and bring the bill.  We were afriad of being rude by asking where the heck our bill was.  So, when you're ready to leave, simply tell them!

Sachi and I were just talking about this and how Americans are really used to being rushed in and out of meals. I think we're both used to it and expect it, unfortunately. Another member, SupaManu, said something similar about France and I think both NZ and France are doing it the right way. Eating is an event that should be savored.

One thing we always thought weird whenever we ate out in Turkey: Waiters would not wait a moment if they thought we were finished with our meal, and would swoop down on our table and wisk away a plate - even if were mid-kabob. A friend finally explained that Turks find it unhospitable to leave a dirty plate in front of a guest. We still managed leisurely meals whenever we could, but always made sure to keep at least one hand on our plate.

BTW, they not really tip in New Zealand either, but they won't refuse it either :-)
