Sachi's brother Mark, a super-gadget-geek, is taking care of our dog and house and has hooked up the perfect solution to allow us to get our Amos fix while on the road.  It's a video web cam focused on his bed that we can call "call" into using Skype 2.0.  Only one person at a time can use it, so we can't expose the feed.

We can even hear sound along with the video and if there were speakers, we could talk to him, but we figure that might drive him crazy.  Mark has been using it to watch Amos' movements during the day (he's a sneaky dog).

Mark, can you comment on the set up in terms of what people need to do something similar themselves?  Thanks!

I'm glad you guys can keep connected with your pup while you're on the road.  That is too cute.  Your kids aren't going to get away with anything when you guys go out of town for the weekend! haha!

It's quite simple really... i bought a regular webcam (Logitech QuickCam) and plugged it into a spare laptop that I wasn't using. Download Skype 2.0 (it's a beta version that has video-chat capabilities) and create a profile in Skype. I have it auto-answer since the dog can't click the button to answer the call. Next just point the camera to what you want and whenever you want to see/hear what's going on, just use Skype to call the laptop. It's that simple. Happy spying!

indeed. i "discovered" that too. greetings jan from www.webtown.com.my. you can even run it hidden in the tray if you want. but it does pop up when an incoming call is there... spooky, not?

This is brilliant! We've wanted to do something similar with our dog Oliver for ages, but I couldn't work out how to dial into it. Skype! Wonderful.
Our only problem is Oliver's 14 different places to sleep will require a lot of hardware...

I had instructions on how to get skype 1.x into auto answer, but I think 2.0 is different? how do you put skype 2.0 into auto answer mode?

I am a skype newcomer but a great enthusiast, and have also thought of using it as an on-call peekercam.  The "answer calls automatically" button can be found in the advanced tab of the pop up you get  at through tools/options.  Hope that helps.

Couple this with a wireless camera attached to the dog collar and you've got what I call a "Trixie-Cam."

This tutorial shows how to setup auto answering in Skype for only selected users http://wikisos.org/wiki/Windows_XP:How_to_setup_selective_auto_answer_in...
