I love reading people's pack it lists.  Yours look quite streamlined and resemble what happens when I go travelling with my partner Sam.  Any extra space in his (larger) pack is filled with misc. cables, spare camera batteries and chargers for every conceivable power type.  Is it just a boy thing... or a gadget-freak thing?

I do have one question though - what is a "Pack-It Cube" ( and what's a Half Cube and a Full Cube?) .  This might just be the packing device I've been missing all these years.  I've never heard of these in Oz.

For the record - and after many discussions - I think the most useful, but underrated travel item is duct tape.  You won't know just how cool this is until your pack breaks, your pants split or you need to make emergency  signs when you've broken down at the edge of the road and have no pen handy!

Take care, happy travels, christy

Hi Christy! The pack-it cubes, so far, have been very, very handy. They are simple little zippered mesh cubes that we use to carry clothes. You can find all the info here: http://www.eaglecreek.com/packit_cubes.html

5 ziplocks?  Didn't we make ourselves clear at Corner Bistro as we expressed the absolute and dire necessity of ziplock bags?  The gallon size with the pink zip... you won't regret it. Cool

Good call on the Immodium.  Unfortunately you'll need it once... or twice... or more...

I might bring 1 or 2 more pairs of underwear?... just to take a bit of pressure off of the nightly underwear-washing-in-the-sink routine.  Oh, and don't forget to bring a little detergent.  The powdered kind is more travel-friendly... we kept ours in a plastic bottle with a good lid from REI.

Lee, don't forget your passport (didn't see it on the list)! Wink

Enjoy your last few days in the States!  Last word of advice:  go have one last meal at Taco Bell...

Happy Travels!

Stephanie & Ken

You did well in reading comprehension tests didn't you Stephanie? :) We really appreciate the last minute input and I think you have reminded us to get more ziplocks. I do have my passport! It was great hanging out with you guys in NYC- we learned so much and we'll be thinking about your advice!

This is the first time I've heard about your trip, but it sounds like an incredible experience! I look forward to sometime in the next few years going on similar trips. I am getting into a lot of photography, so am facing similar issues of balancing the supplies and equipment I need, with traveling simple and light. Your packing list is a great resource, but now that you have completed your trip, can you reflect back on your decisions? Any points along the way where you would have killed for one more pair of underwear, or something you resented having to drag along because you never used it? What changes did you make along the way, or what changes would you make if you were doing it again?

Hey John!

Thanks for the comment.  I think we got really lucky for the most part. We bought small (carry-on size) backpacks, so that limited what we could take.  For the most part, things worked out very well in terms of specific items - the majority of the items above made it all the way through.  For clothes, we carries lots of layers - like a hoody and rain jacket that were rarely used for most of the trip.  However, they were essential and worthwhile.  We forgot to bring cheap flip-flops for shower shoes, etc.  I ended up wearing those a lot.  I took 3 t-shirts and if I could do it over, I would leave everything cotton behind.  My synthetic button down short sleeve shirts rocked - easy to clean, quick drying etc.  Cotton is the devil's fabric! :-)  I loved Ex-Officio traveling underwear. I took 3 pairs and loved, loved loved them.  I still wear them and would prefer only those underwear - too bad they are $25 a pop.  It would have been nice to have 4-5 pairs.

In terms of gadgetry, I kept pretty much everything we had when we departed, except the extra computer battery.  I sent it home because we never used it and it was heavy.  We left thinking we had too many gadgets, but ended up buying a video camera about half-way through.  I regret not getting the camera earlier - it was an asset on the trip that added a layer of fun.  I love photography but I'm more in the point and shoot style.  Our Pentax Optio WP worked flawlessly, other than getting water inside it.

Of course, changing  climates is a great reason to change clothes and we only really needed this entering Europe in the fall.  Even then it was limited to long underwear, gloves and scarves and a jacket for Sachi.

 Hope this helps!

Definitely helpful Lee. I'm not sure when or where I'll be going, but I'm a sucker for traveling and look forward to as much as I can. I'm used to much shorter trips (1wk), but more in the backcountry, so am used to carrying my large (90L) pack loaded with gear. Not sure whether I'd be able to survive with just a carry-on! I will be moving to Squamish this summer, where I have been for the last 5 summers, but a little more permanently now. I will continue working in the outdoor adventure guiding industry, but as well keep working on my photography (http://housser.ca/). If you're ever up around Squamish or Vancouver it would be great to meet you and hear some of your stories!
