Narvik of Northen Norway

It took us 4 busses and 3 trains to do it, but we have finally arrived in Narvik, Norway, from Helsinki, Finland - the starting point for exploring the Lofoten Islands and fjords via rental car over the next few days. Narvik is a cool little town that has the northernmost train station (and supposedly disco) in the world. It is a few hours north of the Arctic Circle by train.

This completes our overland trek from Beijing - from the Pacific to the Atlantic across Eurasia. Going from Asia to Norway seems like traversing planets instead of the same land mass. What a contrast.

On the  way through we stopped at Rovaniemi, which is known for being so close to the Arctic Circle and having Santa's "official" residence.  Surprise, surprise - it was a giant gift shop!

I wasn't really upset - i just love making stupid faces in these contraptions.

We did cross the Arctic Circle for the first time there though...

...so we can check that one off the list.

Check out the dogs in Lofoten! They have a very special breed of dogs there called Lundehund, wonderful little guys. In the (very old) days every family used to have a flock of them to climb in and out of puffin holes pulling out the birds high up on those sheer cliff faces. Which is why lundehundar all have 6 toes for climbing and can seal off their ears when they're digging!

The breed nearly died out some time ago but has been rescued, and we now have one here in Sweden. His name is Tim, he'd love you to say hi to his cousins there!

You know, I can't remember the exact name of the fishing town on the southern coast...I got my pencils mixed up when I quoted Svolvaer...I think it sounded like Hammeroy or something...in any case, assuming the midnight sun still shows, a fish soup will go down very well, and the most amazing wolly hat I ever bought was in that village, about 2.5 meters long and pointy, like a leprechaun, get one if you can, it will turn heads!

I'm not sure what I would do with a 2.5 meter pointy hat Manu! I don't think it would fit in the backpack very well. :)

it's unique (almost) it looks incredibly cool kids would love it, and adults would think you Gandalf it keeps you warmer than any other wolly hat you'll ever have! enjoy the rest of your experience :)
